HOW SUPER LAWYERS WERE SELECTED

The General Survey – In July 2003, Law & Politics mailed more than 65,000 ballots to attorneys in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, asking them to vote for the best lawyers they had personally observed in action. The intent was to discourage lawyers from voting for others based purely on reputation. Each ballot included the name of the addressee-attorney, and only ballots properly verified by that attorney were counted.

Each lawyer was given a score based on the number and type of votes received. Votes from lawyers in other firms counted for significantly more points than votes received from lawyers in the same firm.

The Research Process – The attorney-led research department carefully reviewed balloting results and verified nominee data with the nominee or his or her law firm. The results were reviewed for any evidence of ballot manipulation and any such ballot was eliminated from consideration.

In addition to the general survey, the research staff reviewed the credentials of Southern California attorneys and assigned points based on defined evaluation criteria. The research staff also reviewed each candidate’s record to assure that every Southern California Super Lawyer is in good standing, with no record of disciplinary action. In addition, every nominee who verified data signed a certification that they have not been the subject of any disciplinary proceedings.

The Blue Ribbon Panel Review – The lawyers on the list were divided according to more than 60 areas of practice. A blue ribbon panel consisting of the top point-getters from the general survey and research process was assembled in each area of practice. The blue ribbon panel members reviewed the list of nominees in their area of practice and assigned points to each attorney.

The Final Selection Process – The point totals from the general survey, research process and the blue ribbon panel review were added to arrive at a final point total. To achieve a diverse and well-balanced list of top attorneys that will meet the needs of a variety of legal consumers, law firm size was considered. The research department selected the top-ranking candidates, forming a final list that comprises approximately 5 percent of the total number of lawyers in Southern California.*

The list of Southern California Super Lawyers includes attorneys in private practice, as well as attorneys in non-private practice, such as prosecutors, in-house counsel, and public service lawyers.

(*Anecdotally, Ms. Yardum-Hunter fell into the middle of the list, placing her within the top 2.5 percent of immigration lawyers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.)
